"I am grateful to Belgium for this decision, which is important for every Ukrainian, for this deeply symbolic step," Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted.

Ukraine recognized the Holodomor as genocide in 2006. The parliaments of two dozen countries, including the United States, Canada, Poland, and Australia, have also recognized the Holodomor as genocide. The European Parliament's resolution of October 23, 2008, recognizes the Holodomor as a crime against the Ukrainian people and against humanity.

In France, in November 2022, the parliament prepared a draft resolution on recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine as a crime against humanity. The text calls on the French government to "officially recognize the forced and planned famine of the Ukrainian peasantry in 1932 and 1933 by the Soviet authorities as a crime against humanity" and publicly condemn it. According to the draft resolution, the French government is also called upon to facilitate internationally free access to Holodomor-related archives to allow historians to "continue research, establish and document the facts."

"Between 1930 and 1933, several regions of the USSR, including Kazakhstan, the North Caucasus, and Ukraine, experienced a terrible famine. (...) In Ukraine, this artificially induced famine was notable for its scale," the text of the draft resolution of the French National Assembly states. The document does not mention the term "genocide".

Background. As a reminder, on February 1, the Bulgarian Parliament recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
