Nordic countries boycott Oreo, Mars and Milka manufacturer over its operations in russia

In response to the boycott, Mondelez appealed to the Norwegian government to protect its business

Dozens of companies in Sweden and Norway have refused to sell products of the American confectionery manufacturer Mondelez International, which owns the Oreo, Mars, Alpen Gold, Milka, Toblerone, Barny and other brands.

The boycott is due to the fact that Mondelez did not leave russia after the start of the russian invasion of Ukraine.

To date, the boycott has been joined by SAS and Norwegian Air, the SJ railway group, the Strawberry hotel chain, the Elkiop retail chain, the Fjord Line shipping group, the Norwegian Football Association, and others.

At the same time, the American corporation has a strong presence in Norway and Sweden, where it owns local manufacturers of sweets Freai and Marabou. In response to the boycott, Mondelez appealed to the Norwegian government to protect its business.

In May, the Ukrainian authorities added the American corporation to the list of "international sponsors of war" for continuing to operate in russia, where the company has three factories.

In 2022, Mondelez's profits in russia amounted to $339 million, and it paid $61 million to the russian budget, the Ukrainian authorities said.

According to Reuters, the refusal of some Scandinavian companies to work with Mondelez was directly dictated by Ukraine's decision.

The American corporation, in turn, said it would try to meet with the authorities of the Scandinavian countries to explain its position.

According to Novaya Gazeta Evropa, the 100 largest Western companies that remained in russia after the invasion of Ukraine increased their net profit by 54% in 2022, to 1.1 trillion rubles. Mondelez Corporation entered the top ten leaders in the food industry along with PepsiCo.

Background. As a reminder, the NACP has added Oreo and Milka to the list of war sponsors.
