Switzerland rejects request to sell 96 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine

Country aims to maintain its neutral status

The Federal Council of Switzerland has rejected a request by the local company Ruag AG to sell 96 Leopard 1 A5 tanks to Ukraine.

This was announced on the Swiss government's website.

The Federal Council believes that such a deal would not comply with current legislation, in particular, the law on military equipment. Furthermore, the country aims to maintain its neutral status.

Government officials emphasised that the tanks were stored in Italy and would require repair in Germany.

Background. Mind earlier reported that Ukraine would receive another 14 Leopard 2 tanks from the Netherlands. The order will be fulfilled by the German defence company Rheinmetall.
