First US Abrams tanks to arrive in Ukraine in September

Before Ukrainian troops can start using them, they must undergo a 10-week training course

The first batch of American Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine in September, consisting of 6 to 8 vehicles.

Source. Politico writes about this, citing sources in the Pentagon and the US Congress.

In August, the tanks will be delivered to Germany for re-equipment and then handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The military will receive the M1A1 model instead of the more modern M1A2, which would take much longer to deliver.

In addition, the Abrams will be stripped of the most sensitive technologies, including depleted uranium armor, before shipment.

In total, the United States will provide Kyiv with 31 tanks, which is equivalent to one battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Before Ukrainian troops can start using them, they must undergo a 10-week training course at the Grafenwoehr base in Germany. According to a Pentagon spokesman, the training will end in August.

The New York Times previously reported that the United States had radically revised the schedule for the delivery of Abrams to Ukraine, citing the US military. According to them, this was done to support the Ukrainian army's counteroffensive: the tanks will arrive just in time to help the Ukrainian army defend the liberated territory.
