Mike Johnson, a 51-year-old Republican from Louisiana, a Trump supporter and opponent of further aid to Ukraine, has been officially announced as the new Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
While Republicans on the far right consider Johnson a staunch conservative, moderate Republicans see him as a pragmatic and reasonable leader who will uphold conservative values while facilitating the passage of legislation through the House.
Democrats, however, fear that Mike Johnson is too far to the right. They point out that Johnson voted against confirming the 2020 election results, urging Trump to "keep fighting" and "exhaust all available legal remedies."
He also takes a strong conservative stance on a number of political issues, opposing, for example, abortion rights and same-sex marriage.
In addition, Johnson is also against further US military aid to Ukraine.
