On Friday, the United States will announce a major new package of sanctions against Russia to mark the death of politician Alexei Navalny and the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. This was announced by the White House National Security Advisor John Kirby, Reuters reports.
The sanctions should "hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr Navalny," Kirby said, without specifying what they would consist of.
A day earlier, Germany announced that it would propose new sanctions against Russia in connection with Navalny's death. German officials explained that these sanctions would target officials and employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) who are linked to the opposition leader's death.
Alexei Navalny died in penal colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District on 16 February. The prison said that after a walk, the politician "felt unwell and fainted almost immediately", and that "resuscitation measures" did not yield positive results – "paramedics pronounced him dead".
