US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland plans to resign in the coming weeks.
Source. This was announced in an official statement by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, according to the State Department's website.
In his statement, Blinken noted "the passion with which Victoria fought for what she believed in most: freedom, democracy, and human rights."
He also called her role in "standing up to Putin's invasion of Ukraine and building a global coalition to deal Putin a strategic defeat" "irreplaceable".
The same statement said that Nuland's duties would be temporarily performed by Under Secretary of State for Management John Bass.
Victoria Nuland has worked in various government positions for over 30 years. During the mass protests on the Maidan in Kyiv, as an official representative of the US State Department, she regularly visited Ukraine, personally communicated with protesters and even treated them to buns and cookies.
In 2019, Nuland was denied entry to Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry called it a response to personal anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the United States.
