The US authorities have announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, blacklisting nearly 300 individuals and companies. Among them is Russia's largest low-cost airline, Pobeda.

"Pobeda was established in 2014 and is 100% owned by Aeroflot. The company violated aviation sanctions that prohibit the supply of components and spare parts for airliners to Russia, the State Department explains.

The company continues to fly American and European-made aircraft, and last year purchased and transported $1 million worth of sanctioned parts, the department said.

In addition, the State Department notes that in January 2024, Pobeda participated in the transportation of aircraft parts from India with the help of Iranian Mahan Air.

The company has now been included in the SDN-list: its assets are subject to blocking, as well as the property of all its subsidiaries where Pobeda owns more than 50%. American citizens and companies are prohibited from conducting any transactions with the company.

Last year, Pobeda carried 13 million passengers and earned RUB 21.3 billion in profit, unlike Aeroflot, which remained in the red for the fourth year in a row. In 2023, Aeroflot lost another RUB 14 billion, and in 2020-2023, it lost more than RUB 200 billion.

Sanctions have also been imposed on a number of plants, including the Ural car plant, Bryansk Automobile Plant, Yaroslavl Motor Plant, Fryazinsky Power Transistor Plant, Vladimir Precision Alloy Plant, and Proton Plant.

The sanctioned companies include Sibantracite, IBS Group companies and Astra Group.

In addition, more than 10 ships have been added to the sanctions lists.

"The new measures target Russia's military-industrial base, chemical and biological weapons programmes, and companies and individuals in third countries that help Russia acquire key resources for the production of weapons or defence-related products," the US Treasury Department said in a press release.

In addition to Russian companies, sanctions have been imposed on a number of companies from other countries, including Chinese and Turkish.

As a reminder, the US imposed sanctions on Iran for the production and sale of UAVs.

Earlier it was reported that China allows a Russian ship carrying weapons to use its berth.
