The US authorities have been considering imposing duties on aluminum imports for several months. Russia's only aluminum producer is Rusal, which belongs to the EN+ holding company founded by oligarch Oleg Deripaska.
Rusal is the world's second-largest aluminum producer, and for the United States, imports of this metal from Russia account for 10% of its total supply.
However, in October, aluminum imports from Russia to the United States fell by 3%. At the time, Bloomberg reported that the White House was discussing a complete ban on imports of Russian metal.
Demand for Russian metal in the United States was gradually declining due to the fact that aluminum companies from Europe were relocating production to the United States, providing the market with locally produced metal, analysts said.
