Ukrainian banks reduced mortgage lending by 5.3 times in 2022 – NBU

Two-thirds of mortgages were issued on the eve of the invasion of the terrorist country of russia

What happened? In 2022, Ukrainian banks issued 2,009 mortgage loans totaling UAH 1.96 billion, which is 5.3 times less than a year earlier (4.3 times less in monetary terms).

Details. The regulator clarified that in 2022, mortgage lending was completely suspended for three months – in March, April, and May. In the summer, it gradually began to recover: from 2 million UAH in June, it increased to 500 million UAH in December. It is noted that 99% of all mortgage loans in June-December were granted for the purchase of housing in the secondary market.

In September-November, the NBU notes, banks issued 252 mortgage loans totaling 279 million UAH, and in December – 405 loans worth 501 million UAH. This is the highest monthly figure since the beginning of the full-scale war. 

In terms of regions, the largest number of mortgage loans were issued in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast during this period – 241 agreements totaling almost UAH 345 million (43% of the total amount). The second place was taken by Volyn Oblast – 48 agreements worth 60 million UAH (8%).
