A group of members of the U.S. House of Representatives arrived in Kyiv to assess the situation on the ground.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Michael Turner said that continuing to provide weapons to Ukraine in its fight against Russia enjoys "great" support in the United States, despite vocal opposition from the far-right faction in his own Republican Party.
Source. This was reported by the Voice of America.
Turner, who chairs the committee that oversees U.S. intelligence agencies, said this in Kyiv, where he arrived for a short visit with three other Republican congressmen.
"There are people on both the right and the left who question the appropriateness of continued support or the extent of that support. That will certainly be part of the discussion," Turner said, "but the overwhelming majority supports continued assistance to Ukraine so that it can continue to fight this Russian aggression," he said.
The trip to Ukraine's capital is part of an effort by senior House officials to lay the groundwork for continued U.S. support, but face opposition from within their party.
As the war in Ukraine enters its second year, Congressman Chris Stewart said the American people will support continued assistance as long as U.S. resources are used effectively.
"The war will continue for some time," he said. – This is not surprising. Most conflicts between states, such as this one, take time to resolve. Americans understand that as long as they see progress in being careful with money and thoughtful about how we use American resources."
Congressman Rich McCormick noted that the countries of the world are united in support of Ukraine.
"The situation has never been more urgent, and I think you see Europe rising to the challenge as never before," said McCormick, who is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
A fourth member of the delegation, Congressman Larin Lahood, also a member of the Intelligence Committee, said the purpose of the visit to Ukraine was to assess the situation on the ground as a result of "the illegal, unprovoked war that Putin has launched."
"This will help us when we come back and we need to make decisions about further funding and further support in connection with this conflict," he added.
Background. Earlier it was reported that five US congressmen called on Biden to send fighter jets to Ukraine.
