Joe Biden has announced his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election

This has not yet received significant support from either the opposition or the public

80-year-old US President Joe Biden announced his candidacy in a video posted on his Twitter account.

"Let's finish the job," he suggested, emphasizing the fight for freedom and democracy.

"Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job," Joe Biden wrote on Twitter.

Joe Biden again named Kamala Harris, the current "deputy" as a candidate for vice president.

The nomination was immediately criticized by the opposition. Republicans accuse the 80-year-old Democratic president of being out of touch with reality.

"Biden is so out of touch with reality that he thinks he deserves another four years in office, even though he's only creating crises," said Ronna McDaniel, leader of the opposition Republican party.

During a recent trip to Ireland, Joe Biden hinted to reporters that the announcement of his candidacy should be made "very soon."

"This trip just reinforced my optimism about what we can still do," he said during his visit to Ireland.

Joe Biden has not yet announced any competitors within his party. Invitations have been sent out to gather the most important donors to the Democratic Party in Washington later this week.

American voters, on the other hand, are more skeptical about the prospect of a new term for Joe Biden. An NBCNews poll released on Sunday shows that 70% of respondents do not want Biden to run again. 60% said the same about Trump.

Likely candidates for the presidential election from the Republican party

Donald Trump. Despite the allegations against him, former President Trump is now significantly ahead of his Republican rivals in the polls. He himself constantly says that he will become a candidate, while condemning the "witch hunt" declared against him by the justice system.

Ron DeSantis. At 44, he is considered a rising star on the right. In 2018, this former naval officer was elected governor of Florida by a narrow margin after being endorsed by Donald Trump. Since then, he has distanced himself from the former US president and gained popularity by spreading ultra-conservative statements about education or immigration.

Mike Pence. After years of unwavering loyalty to Trump, his former vice president changed his position after the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. This 63-year-old evangelical Christian, a staunch opponent of abortion, now seems determined to run for the White House. The former radio host is currently traveling the country, increasing the number of appearances in states that could matter during the Republican primaries.

Nikki Haley. Former governor of South Carolina and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is the only woman to take part in this Republican primary. She has openly criticized Trump's statements about election fraud on the part of Democrats.

Tim Scott. A senator from South Carolina, he openly dreams of becoming the first black Republican president. In November last year, the 57-year-old man spoke about his grandfather, who voted for Barack Obama. "I wish he had lived long enough to see another president of color, and this time it would be a Republican!"

Background. As a reminder, Biden extended the ban on russian-linked vessels entering US ports.
