As a result of the occupiers' sabotage of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Power, there was a sharp drop in the water level and erosion of the banks, which led to a critical situation for the protection of archaeological heritage in the region. Archaeological sites from various periods are located under the waters of the hydroelectric power station.
This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.
It is noted that in the territories of Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa oblasts, looting diggers have become more active, scouring for valuable items using metal detectors.
The Ministry has appealed to the heads of regional state administrations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and law enforcement agencies to counteract the looting of archaeological sites, and also discussed the situation with the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Khortytsia National Reserve, and other partners.
The Ministry reports that archaeologists, museum workers, monument protectors, and law enforcement officers are conducting monitoring, recording damages, and other urgent work.
