"We understand that we will not need the state border line with our northern neighbors in civilian form for a long time, as we have no friends on the other side of the border. Therefore, the task has been set: to make the border strip impassable for the enemy," he was quoted as saying by the Joint Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

About 5,000 meters of trenches and 6,500 meters of anti-tank ditches have been equipped along the border, Nayev said. In addition, the military has built 80 shelters and firing positions for personnel and heavy equipment. Ukraine's border with Belarus is 1,084 kilometers long.

Following reports of the Wagner group's deployment to Belarus, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered the northern direction to be reinforced. The order was given to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi and the commander of the northern direction Serhiy Nayev, Zelensky said.

Earlier, Zaluzhnyi said in an interview with The Washington Post that he was concerned about the deployment of Wagner mercenaries to Belarus.

"Our task is to prepare for the worst and most likely scenario. And we will try to minimize the possible consequences of what may happen," Zaluzhnyi said.
