The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy has supported the presidential draft law that would officially establish the status of English as one of the languages of international communication in Ukraine.
This was reported by Ukrainian MP Volodymyr Viatrovych on Facebook.
"The Humanitarian Committee of the Parliament has just unanimously decided to support the presidential bill 9432 on the English language with the removal of all provisions on cinema and television.
All norms that would narrow the scope of the Ukrainian language on television and in film distribution are removed," he wrote.
In particular, the following restrictions were removed from the draft law
the requirement to show English-language films in cinemas in their original language;
amendments to the law on cinematography;
amendments to the law on the state language in terms of cinema;
amendments to the law on media to reduce the quota of Ukrainian-language programs.
Viatrovych thanked his colleagues "for a wise state decision that will allow us to consider the draft law without explosive anti-Ukrainian norms."
Background. Earlier, MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak said that a Rada committee had recommended that the law on the use of English in Ukraine be adopted in the first reading.
