One of the ways to end the war in Ukraine could be for Kyiv to give up part of the Russian-occupied territories in exchange for joining NATO.
Source. This proposal was made by the head of the office of the NATO Secretary General, Stefan Jenssen, quoted by the Norwegian edition VG.
According to the NATO chief of staff, this way Ukraine's security could be guaranteed after the war with Russia is over.
"I am not saying that this is the way it should be. But this is probably a possible solution," he added.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has not previously expressed readiness to discuss possible solutions for Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Jenssen insists on the need to think about this issue and determine how to ensure Ukraine's security after the war.
Both Stoltenberg and Jensen emphasize the importance of Ukraine's independent choice. Kyiv itself will decide on the time and conditions of future negotiations with Russia, according to the bloc's representatives.
The NATO chief of staff noted that discussions on Ukraine's status after the war have already begun and the issue of transferring territory to Russia was raised by other participants in the discussion. As a result of the discussions, the leaders of NATO member states decided that an invitation to Ukraine to join the alliance would be formulated if "allied countries reach an agreement and Kyiv fulfills the relevant conditions," Jenssen recalled.
The NATO chief of staff emphasized that Russia is currently facing serious military difficulties, so it is unlikely that it will be able to seize new territories. Rather, it is a question of which territories Ukraine will be able to return, he said.
Background. Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that Ukraine does not have enough weapons to turn the tide of the war.
