Latvian Defense Minister Ināra Mūrniece has called the suggestion by some Russian media that the drone strike on the Pskov airfield could have been carried out from Latvia's territory an absurd fabrication.
"The allegation of Latvia's involvement in the events of last night in Pskov is an absurd invention, most likely to divert the attention of the Russian population from the losses of the Russian army at the front, as well as losses inside the country when Russian military equipment and infrastructure are being destroyed," Delfi quoted Minister Murniece as saying.
Some Russian bloggers began speculating that the strike on the civilian-military airfield in Pskov could have been launched from Latvia or Estonia, rather than Ukraine, almost immediately after the strike, which took place shortly before midnight on August 29-30.
These assumptions are based solely on the fact that Pskov is 40-60 km from the borders of Estonia and Latvia, while the closest point on the territory of Ukraine is located approximately 700 km from Pskov.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said a phrase that implies that the Russian authorities do not know where the drones that attacked the Pskov airfield at night came from.
"I have no doubt that our military experts are currently working on these issues – they are finding out the routes, analyzing how it was done in order to take appropriate measures to prevent such situations in the future," Peskov said.
Background. As a reminder, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine confirmed the destruction of 4 Russian Il-76s in Pskov as a result of a night attack by drones.
