SBU: Russians struck Kostyantynivka with S-300, not Ukrainian military with Buk

Podolyak said that such publications in foreign media will require additional legal assessment by investigative bodies

The Security Service of Ukraine confirms that on September 6, the market in Kostyantynivka was struck by the Russian military.

The SBU is conducting an investigation under the article on violation of the laws and customs of war. According to the investigation, the enemy hit a civilian object with an S-300 system, according to a comment received by BBC News Ukraine.

"This is evidenced, in particular, by the identified missile debris recovered at the scene of the tragedy," the statement said. "The investigation is also examining a number of other materials that indicate the enemy's involvement in this shelling. Currently, the pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and a number of examinations have been appointed."

Recently, the New York Times published an investigation that concluded that the recent strike on a market in the town of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region was likely caused by a Ukrainian missile that went off course and was fired from a Buk air defense system.

"Undoubtedly, the appearance in foreign publications of articles questioning Russia's involvement in the strike on Konstantinovka leads to the growth of conspiracy theories, and therefore will require additional legal assessment by the investigating authorities," commented Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, in a commentary to the New York Times.

"We should not forget: it was Russia that started the invasion of Ukraine and it is Russia that is responsible for bringing the war to our country," Podolyak added, "And it is Russia that regularly launches massive missile, bomb and drone strikes against civilian infrastructure and civilians. Ukraine is exclusively defensive, protecting itself and its territories."

Background. As a reminder, on September 6, the Russian occupiers attacked a market in Kostiantynivka, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported 16 dead and more than 30 wounded.
