Twitter deletes several hundred Hamas-related accounts after European Commission's ultimatum

Earlier, the European Commissioner said that the platform was used to spread banned content and disinformation

After Hamas' attack on Israel, Twitter deleted or flagged tens of thousands of posts that violated its rules. This was announced by the platform's CEO Linda Iaccarino in a letter to European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton. The social network also deleted "several hundred" accounts that "tried to manipulate" the topic of the war in Israel.

According to Iaccarino, since the attack on Israel, Company X has taken steps to "delete or label tens of thousands of posts" containing disinformation and "illegal content" (aggressive statements, hate speech). The company has reallocated resources and reoriented its moderator teams to respond more quickly to posts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"We are deeply concerned about the large-scale and unprecedented terrorist attack on Israel and the loss of innocent lives. <...> X is committed to serving the public, especially at such critical times, and understands the importance of combating any illegal content that may be disseminated through the platform. There is no place for terrorist organizations and extremist groups on X, and we continue to remove such accounts in real time," Yaccarino wrote.

The company clarified that new accounts "affiliated with Hamas" have recently appeared on the social network and are being blocked by moderators. In addition, X has started deleting accounts that spread fake news and manipulate events in Israel and the Gaza Strip, according to X's official security account.

Earlier, Breton sent a letter to Elon Musk, the owner of X, demanding that "violent and terrorist content" and disinformation be removed from the social network, as it contradicts the EU law on digital services. The EU gave the platform 24 hours to remove the illegal content.

"Following the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, we have reason to believe that your platform is being used to disseminate prohibited content and disinformation in the EU," Breton wrote.

Background. As a reminder, Kremlin bots made every effort to spread the meme of Musk with Zelensky.
