Experts estimate how many buildings and structures in Ukraine have been destroyed by Russia

One of the important elements of the survey is to determine whether people can return to parts of their homes that have not been directly damaged

According to the Kyiv School of Economics, the direct damage to Ukraine's infrastructure caused by Russia's full-scale invasion exceeded $150 billion. Almost $56 billion of this amount is the loss of housing stock. More than 150,000 buildings and structures in Ukraine have been destroyed because of the war. Most of them are residential buildings.

In Ukraine, there are almost 160 thousand buildings and structures destroyed due to Russian aggression, about 20 thousand of them are multi-storey buildings.

These data were provided by the Director of the State Research Institute of Building Structures, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Hennadii Farieniuk.

"According to statistics, almost 160,000 buildings and structures in Ukraine have been damaged by the war. Almost 20 thousand of them are high-rise buildings. These are complex engineering structures. And we need an effective approach that will help determine the extent of their damage. The most important thing is to objectively determine whether a building is considered completely destroyed or partially damaged and subject to restoration," emphasized Fareniuk.

During the war, experts of the Institute of Building Structures examined about 400 multi-storey buildings.

One of the important elements of the survey is to determine whether people can return to the parts of the buildings that have not been directly damaged and whether it is safe to continue using these facilities.

The head of the research institution acknowledged that experts often do not want to take responsibility and do not always make informed decisions about demolishing buildings and building new ones in their place.

"On the one hand, it is indeed much better to build something new on the site of many facilities. But it requires huge expenses, and residents will have to wait for years for new housing to be built, while reconstruction of partially damaged buildings requires much less resources and time," Fareniuk said.
