Iran has provided Russia with a large number of powerful surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, including 400 short-range ballistic missiles from the Fateh-110 family.
Source. Reuters writes about this with reference to its sources.
The missiles, which are launched from mobile systems, are capable of hitting targets at a distance of 300 to 700 km. Their deliveries began in early January after an agreement was signed between the Iranian and Russian militaries.
An Iranian source in the country's military leadership told Reuters of at least four missile deliveries and more expected. Some shipments were sent to Russia by sea through the Caspian Sea, while others were transported by plane.
A Russian source confirmed that the missiles had reached their destination. At the same time, the White House, according to Reuters, is aware of negotiations on the supply of this type of weapon between Russia and Iran, but US officials have not yet confirmed that the delivery has taken place.
Reuters notes that Iran is seeking to deepen ties with Russia and China, betting on a confrontation with the United States.
The agency quoted an unnamed Iranian official as saying that military cooperation with Russia is intended to show "Iran's defence capabilities" and "does not mean that Iran has taken sides in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict".
For the first time, information that Iran was going to supply Russia with Fateh-110 and Zolfghar missiles appeared in autumn 2022. Iran supplies the same missiles to the Yemeni Houthis.
Background. Earlier, it was reported that Iran could provide Russia with ballistic missiles for its war with Ukraine – these missiles were demonstrated to Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu during his visit to Iran in September.
