US President Joe Biden has announced that the US is imposing more than 500 new sanctions on Russia.
According to a statement published on the White House website, the new sanctions will, in particular, affect people associated with the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
"Today, I am announcing more than 500 new sanctions against Russia for its war of conquest in Ukraine and for the death of Alexei Navalny, a courageous anti-corruption activist and a key leader of Putin's opposition. These sanctions will target individuals associated with Navalny's imprisonment, as well as Russia's financial sector, defence industry and sanctions evaders on several continents. They ensure that Putin will pay an even greater price for his aggression abroad and repression at home," Biden said.
He also said that the United States is imposing new export restrictions on nearly 100 organisations that "provide behind-the-scenes support to the Russian war machine".
"We are taking steps to further reduce Russia's energy revenues. And I've instructed my team to strengthen support for civil society, independent media, and those fighting for democracy around the world," the US president said.
The day before, Biden said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be subject to US sanctions over Navalny's death. He made the announcement in San Francisco shortly after meeting with Yulia and Daria Navalny.
"I had the honour to meet with his wife and daughter and say that he [Navalny] was a man of incredible courage. Tomorrow we plan to announce sanctions against Putin, who is responsible for his death," Biden said.
He added that following the meeting, it became clear to him that Navalny's widow "will continue to fight."
Earlier today, it became known that the 13th package of EU sanctions against Russia included 194 individuals and legal entities. The European sanctions were imposed on individuals and organisations "responsible for actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine".
