Users of the world's largest social networks, providers and services are facing a global outage. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, TikTok, and many messengers are no longer available.
Potential causes of the outage include damage to the internet backbone in the Red Sea. Yemen's Houthi rebels may have cut cables running under the Red Sea that provide global internet and telecommunications, the Associated Press reports.
Four submarine cables have been cut, including Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1), according to Hong Kong-based provider HGC Global Communications Limited.
The other three damaged cables are Seacom, TGN and EIG. The company estimates that this affects about 25% of traffic.
"Initial analysis has shown that the damaged cable segments are located in the southern part of the Red Sea, under the jurisdiction of Yemen," HGC said.
