NATO summit in Brussels: countries provide Kyiv with a new aid package, but no decision on €100bn allocation

NATO member states have agreed on a new aid package for Ukraine at a summit in Brussels. This was announced by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg following the summit.

In particular, the aid package includes the following items:

• Germany will allocate almost 600 million euros for the purchase of artillery shells, which will be purchased from the Czech Republic;
• France will supply missiles and armoured vehicles;
• The UK will provide 10,000 aircraft – Stoltenberg did not specify which ones. However, two months ago, at a meeting of defence ministers, the allies agreed to provide Ukraine with 1 million drones;
• Finland will provide military aid to Ukraine worth €188 million.

NATO does not believe that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into a clash between Russia and the alliance, Stoltenberg said, but called for increased support for Ukraine.

"We need to make our support even more robust and lasting. Yesterday, NATO Allies agreed to continue planning for a stronger NATO role in coordinating the necessary security assistance and training for Ukraine. NATO is not a party to the conflict, and NATO will not be a party to the conflict. But NATO is supporting Ukraine to help it defend itself. And we just need to remember again and again what this is: this is one country. russia is invading another country, moving forces, battle tanks, aircraft, missiles across the border to take control of Ukraine. And this is a gross violation of international law. This is a full-scale invasion. This is exactly what happened on 24 February. In fact, two scenarios are possible. Firstly, NATO allies will be able to mobilise more support, and Ukraine will be able to regain more territory. The other scenario is that we cannot do this. And then there is a real risk that Russia will seize even more territory, and we will be in a more dangerous position."

According to Stoltenberg, the ministers were supposed to discuss the creation of a new special fund to help Ukraine with a budget of €100 billion. However, this decision has not yet been made. And the NATO Secretary General does not disclose any details.

Background. As a reminder, NATO foreign ministers met in Brussels on 3 April to discuss two items: the creation of a five-year fund of more than €100 billion to be used to help Ukraine, and the prospects of leading the Ukrainian Defence Contact Group.
