Denmark to allocate $5 million to restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions

In total, the energy sector suffered direct damage and indirect financial losses of $56.2 billion

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will allocate €4.7 million to the Energy Support Fund to restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure in Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions, the Energy Ministry announced on 26 June.

The recent increase in Russian strikes has put a heavy strain on Ukraine's power grid, with several power plants destroyed or out of commission.

According to a report by the Kyiv School of Economics, the energy sector has suffered direct damage and indirect financial losses of $56.2 billion, with reconstruction needs amounting to $50.5 billion.

"Denmark became the first sponsor of the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine, contributing to the restoration of the Ukrainian energy sector back in April 2022. We are sincerely grateful to our partners for this unwavering position and constant support," said Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko.

"This is especially necessary in the frontline areas, where energy facilities are subject to daily enemy attacks," he added.

The Energy Support Fund for Ukraine was established at the joint initiative of Galushchenko and European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson in spring 2022.

The total amount of donor contributions to the fund as of June was more than €551 million, according to the Ukrainian ministry.

Germany, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Austria have all contributed or announced their intentions to contribute to the fund in the past few weeks, the statement said.

Background. Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has carried out eight large-scale attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and several smaller ones. In particular, an attack in April destroyed the Trypillia thermal power plant, the main supplier of electricity to Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Cherkasy regions. Due to the electricity shortage in Ukraine, blackouts began on 15 May, occurring several times a day.
