Kyiv plans to submit a draft resolution on nuclear safety and security of Ukraine's nuclear facilities to the UN General Assembly.
Source. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Twitter (X) on 3 July.
According to Zelenskyy, the document will mainly focus on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, which has been under Russian occupation since March 2022, leading to increased nuclear safety risks.
IAEA monitoring teams have been based at the facility on a rotating basis since September 2022, but Russian authorities have so far denied IAEA inspectors full access to the plant.
Zelenskyy said he met with the President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis. The visit to Kyiv was the first visit to Ukraine by the President of the General Assembly in almost 30 years.
"I thanked him for his support of the first peace summit and its final communiqué. One of the practical results of the summit may be a new resolution on nuclear safety and security of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, in particular Zaporizhzhia NPP," Zelenskyy said.
During the occupation, the plant has been repeatedly disconnected from Ukraine's power grid due to Russia's attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
Energoatom said that since the beginning of the full-scale war, the plant has experienced eight complete shutdowns and one partial shutdown.
Background. A few days ago, the IAEA reported the destruction of a radiation monitoring station near Zaporizhzhia NPP under shelling. Of the 14 such stations, most are out of operation due to shelling or lack of electricity.
