On Monday, 5 August, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced the killing of Jaber Aziz, a battalion commander of the radical Islamist movement Hamas, in the Gaza Strip. A few hours later, the IDF reported that the commander of the radical Hezbollah movement, Ali Jamal Aldin Jawad, was also killed in an air strike in southern Lebanon.
Source. This was reported by DW.
According to the Israeli army, Jaber Aziz was killed a day earlier, on 4 August, as a result of a strike on the buildings of the Hasan Salameh and Nasser schools in the Gaza Strip, where the Hamas command post was located.
Along with the commander, "other terrorists" were killed, the statement said.
Aziz commanded the Hamas al-Furqan battalion from 2020. He planned and participated in terrorist attacks against Israel in October 2023, the IDF said.
Ali Jamal Aldin Jawad, commander of the Hezbollah's Radwan special forces, was killed in the Ebba area of southern Lebanon. Tzahal attached a video of the attack to the message. It shows the Israeli army attacking a moving car.
On 30 June, Israel struck a suburb of Beirut, injuring more than 70 people. The IDF said that the target was a Hezbollah commander responsible for the killing of 12 children and teenagers during the shelling of the village of Majdal Shams.
Background. In early August, Israel announced that it had killed Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas's military wing, who organised the attack on Israel on 7 October.
On 3 August, it became known that Iran may soon attack Israel to avenge the assassination of the Hamas leader. An Iranian diplomat informed of the government's plans told The Wall Street Journal that the response "will be swift and harsh". He also called attempts by various countries to persuade Tehran not to escalate "fruitless".
