What happened? During the two months of full-scale war in Ukraine, russia has almost doubled its revenues from the sale of energy to EU countries. The largest importer is Germany.
Source. This was reported by The Guardian.
Details. During the last two months, russia has earned 62 billion euros in total. EU countries have paid about 44 billion euros for russian gas, oil and coal. To compare: for the whole year 2021 – 140 billion euros, or 12 billion euros per month.
Therefore, russia continues to benefit from its dominance in the European energy market. putin is using oil and gas as economic weapons.
Germany is the main buyer of russian energy. Despite statements by the authorities about attempts to reduce dependence on russia, during the two months of the war, Germany imported energy worth 9 billion euros.
The war and sanctions have reduced exports from russia, but the country is a major supplier of gas, so declining supplies have only raised gas prices, which were already high. For example, in the first three weeks of April, crude oil supplies from russia to foreign ports fell by 30% compared to January and February (before the war). At the same time, raw material prices rose.
Some experts think that the EU is trapped: further restrictions will only lead to further price increases, which will increase russia's income and nullify all European efforts.
