The Ministries of Defense of Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark announced on Tuesday that they will buy at least 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks for Ukraine.
Source. This was reported by CNN.
Details. The Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands clarified that the tanks will be bought directly from the German manufacturer and transferred to Ukraine in the coming months.
Dutch Defense Minister Keesa Ollongren said at a press conference on Tuesday that the Leopard 1 is an old tank, but "definitely quite suitable" for the war in Ukraine.
"It is a reliable tank, and as they are modernized and ready for battle, they will be useful for the Ukrainians," Reuters quoted Kajsa Ollongren as saying.
The Leopard 1 tank was produced in 1965-1984. It is the predecessor of the Leopard 2 and is inferior to the newer model in many respects, including armor strength.
Ukraine will also receive newer Leopard 2 tanks: several dozen of these modern vehicles have been promised by Germany and some other countries.
Background. After meeting with the German Defense Minister, Reznikov said that "there will be a lot of positive news soon."
