Ukraine and the USA will build a small modular reactor

What happened? Ukraine and the United States agreed on a joint pilot project on building a small modular reactor during the COP27 climate conference in Sharm El Sheikh.

Details. The project is called Ukraine Clean Fuels from SMRs, its goal is to produce clean hydrogen and ammonia using a reliable and safe small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) and advanced electrolysis technologies.

Small modular reactors are smaller in size and power than those installed at nuclear power plants. They can be installed in hard-to-reach places where it is impossible to build large nuclear power stations.

U.S. Presidential Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry also announced the launch of the Project Phoenix initiative, which will accelerate the transition of coal-fired power plants in Central and Eastern Europe to nuclear fuel.
