MPs support ban on pro-russian geographical names in Ukraine
248 MPs voted in favour

Parliamentarians have adopted in the second reading bill No. 7253 on the decolonisation of toponymy and the regulation of the use of geographical names in Ukrainian settlements.
This was announced by Yaroslav Zheleznyak, MP and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Committee.
The bill prohibits the assignment of names to geographical objects that glorify, perpetuate, promote or symbolise russia or its prominent, memorable, historical, and cultural places, cities, dates, events, its leaders who carried out military aggression against Ukraine, and other sovereign countries, state totalitarian policies and practices related to the persecution of the opposition (opposition figures), dissidents, and other persons for criticising the Soviet regime.
The implementation of the bill "will create prerequisites for preventing agitation and propaganda activities of persons hostile to Ukraine, accelerate the de-Sovietisation and de-russification of the country, and contribute to strengthening the spirit and morale of the Ukrainian nation," the explanatory note says.
