Russia may demand compensation for explosions on Nord Stream gas pipelines - diplomat

Moscow may demand compensation for the damage caused to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines due to two explosions that occurred last September.

Source. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by Dmitry Birichevsky, head of the Economic Cooperation Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, CNBC reports.

Pipelines connecting Russia and Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea were blown up by unexplained explosions, which Moscow called an act of international terrorism.

"We do not rule out that the issue of compensation for the damage caused by the explosion will be raised later," Birichevsky said.

He did not say from whom Russia would seek compensation.

The total capacity of the two pipelines was 110 billion cubic meters per year, which is more than the 101 billion cubic meters that Russia exported to Europe in 2022. Birichevsky said the future of the pipelines is unclear.

"At the moment, it is very difficult to talk about the future of the Nord Stream gas pipeline system. In general, according to experts, the damaged lines can be restored," he said.

The Kremlin said that all shareholders should decide whether to mothball both pipelines. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia would first establish who was behind the explosions and then demand compensation.

Background. As reported, the shareholders of Nord Stream are discussing the repair of the gas pipeline. They are deciding how to seal and empty the damaged pipeline to stop corrosion.
