The world's first center for the study of childhood trauma caused by explosions has opened in London, which will focus on helping victims of the war in Ukraine.

Source. This was reported by Sky News.

The Center for Pediatric Blast Injury Research, created as a result of a partnership between Imperial College London and Save The Children, will focus on reducing pain in children with limb loss and developing new prostheses.

Almost 1,000 of the reported childhood injuries in Ukraine were caused by explosive weapons, although the actual number of injuries is expected to be much higher.

Anthony Bull, director of the center and professor of musculoskeletal mechanics at Imperial College London, said:

"Children are not just little adults, they are little human beings who have a completely different physiology, different behavior, so they are much more susceptible to blast injury than adults."

"Doctors are doing a great job of learning how to treat children immediately, saving their lives. But they don't know how their first medical intervention can affect the long-term outcome," he added.

The center will fund student researchers for four years and includes advanced technologies such as motion capture and musculoskeletal modeling.

Dr. Andriy Dvorakevych, a leading surgeon at the Lviv City Children's Clinical Hospital, expressed hope that the research center will enable the staff of the recently established Unbroken Center in Ukraine to become self-sufficient.

Dvorakevych, whose hospital has treated about 350 seriously injured children, said:

"The main goal is to treat and rehabilitate Ukrainian patients in Ukraine. Currently, our country has no prosthetic facilities and equipment, so all patients in need of prosthetic care must go to other European countries," he said.

Background. As previously reported, the Unbreakable rehabilitation center in Lviv will manufacture new prostheses for wounded Ukrainians. The company plans to produce 100 prostheses a month.
