Biden calls on Russia to release arrested American journalist

The White House has responded to the arrest of Evan Hershkovich, a journalist for The Wall Street Journal.

CNN asked President Joe Biden what he wanted to say to Russia after the reporter's detention.

"Let him go," the president said as he left the White House this morning.

This is the first time Biden has publicly commented on the issue since Russian authorities charged Gershkovich with espionage the day before.

Asked by another reporter whether the United States would expel Russian diplomats or journalists over Gershkovich's detention, Biden said: "That's not our plan right now."

Later on Friday, US Vice President Kamala Harris said she was "deeply concerned" about Gershkovich's arrest.

"I am unequivocal that we will not tolerate and condemn actual repression of journalists, and that we are absolutely concerned about any attempt to stifle press freedom in any way," Harris said.

Background. As reported, a journalist of The Wall Street Journal was arrested in Russia.

As a reminder, the United States called on all Americans to immediately leave the territory of Russia and requested consular access to the arrested journalist Gershkovich.
