Borrell: Decision on €1bn for ammunition procurement for Ukraine to be made in the coming days

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that a decision on €1 billion for the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine would be made in the coming days.

He said this before a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

After the EU decided to allocate €1 billion under the first track to reimburse EU countries that have already provided Ukraine with ammunition from their stockpiles, the second track – to allocate €1 billion for the purchase of ammunition – is still under discussion due to disagreements among some bloc countries. The third track involves joint purchases of ammunition.

"There are still some differences on the second track. But I am sure that everyone understands that we are in a situation of extreme urgency, and I am sure that in the coming days, we will reach an agreement. But while we are looking for these arrangements, don't think that we are just sitting and waiting, the work is still going on. When we reach legal agreements, the practical work will be completed," Borrell said.

According to him, the first track is already in place, and a request has been received to reimburse the EU countries for €600 million. However, Borrell was unable to report on the ammunition that was supplied beyond the €600 million.

At the same time, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielus Landsbergis, expressed hope that this decision will be made today: "When it comes to finding a quick solution for ammunition for Ukraine, this is not only a political commitment that was approved at the previous Council, but also a message to Ukraine that we will continue to support Ukraine militarily. We expect to be able to find an agreement today."

Background. As a reminder, the EU was unable to fulfil its promise to supply Ukraine with missiles due to controversy.
