"I am ready to do whatever needs to be done. The mission is in progress, but it has not yet been made public. When it is, I will tell you about it," the pontiff told reporters after a three-day visit to Hungary.
"I think peace is always achieved by opening channels. You can never achieve peace by closing the channels of negotiation," he emphasized.
Francis added that he had discussed the situation in Ukraine with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and with the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Hungary, Metropolitan Hilarion of Budapest.
"Everyone is interested in finding a way to peace," he said.
On April 27, on the eve of his visit to Hungary, Pope Francis met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at the Vatican. The head of the Ukrainian government handed the pontiff a photo album with images of war crimes committed by Russian troops in Ukraine. According to The Kyiv Independent, Shmyhal invited the pope to Kyiv and expressed hope that the pontiff would support the "Formula for Peace" developed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The "Formula for Peace" plan includes 10 points: radiation, nuclear, food and energy security, release of all prisoners of war and deportees, restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity, withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities, restoration of justice (including justice for war crimes), countering ecocide, preventing escalation and fixing the end of hostilities. 14 countries and the European Union have announced their support for Zelenskyy's initiative.
