The kremlin was attacked by two drones, but there is no evidence of Ukraine's involvement - CNN analysis

The kremlin has not provided any evidence to support the russian government's claim on Wednesday that Ukraine made an attempt on President vladimir putin's life with a drone.

CNN experts analyzed videos showing the drone incident, but found no evidence of Ukraine's involvement.

Here is what CNN knows so far about how the events unfolded.

A video showing smoke over the kremlin appeared on a local Telegram channel at 2:37 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The first reports of the incident in russian state media outlets TASS and RIA Novosti appeared around 2:33 p.m., about 12 hours later.

Shortly after the first media reports appeared, another video showing the moment the drone exploded over the kremlin began circulating on social media. The video shows a drone flying toward the domed roof of the building, followed by a small explosion.

In this video, two people are seen climbing the dome holding flashlights, and they are seen ducking right before the explosion. The people climbing the dome are absent from the first of these videos, but appear in the second, suggesting that they were responding to the fire caused by the first drone at the time the second drone appeared.

CNN analyzed the video, which shows two separate drones flying from different directions within minutes of each other, based on the time displayed on the clock on the nearby Spasskaya Tower. The first drone was spotted over the kremlin at 2:27 a.m. local time. It exploded over the Senate Palace, after which a fire broke out on its roof.

The second drone was spotted at 02:43 a.m., and its wreckage fell on the kremlin grounds. While the first drone caused a fire at the top of the dome, the second one exploded in midair.

kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made no mention of the incident on Wednesday when speaking to reporters around 12:30 local time, about two hours before media reports appeared, suggesting that the incident may have been covered up.

Ukraine denies any responsibility for the alleged attack, with presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak telling CNN that Ukraine "has nothing to do with drone attacks on the kremlin."

Background. As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to moscow's accusations by noting that Ukraine is fighting on its territory and defending its villages and cities.
