Vatican finally reveals what its "secret" peacekeeping mission is

Pope Francis has asked the head of the Italian Bishops' Conference Matteo Zuppi to organize a peacekeeping mission to try to end the war in Ukraine.

On Thursday, the Vatican press reported that Ukraine and russia agreed to receive the Pope's special envoys to discuss a possible truce.

According to Il Sismografo, Matteo Zuppi was to go to Kyiv, while Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, was planning to go to moscow.

"I can confirm that Pope Francis has instructed Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and head of the Italian Bishops' Conference, to lead a mission to help ease tensions in the Ukrainian conflict," Matteo, the head of the Vatican press office, told reporters.

Francis first spoke of his intention to organize a peacekeeping mission when he returned from a trip to Hungary in April, but he did not provide details at the time.

Last weekend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Vatican and met with Pope Francis.
