US announces new aid package for Ukraine worth $375 million
It includes ammunition for HIMARS, artillery shells, TOW anti-tank guided missiles, as well as Javelin and AT-4 systems
The US has announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth $375 million, disclosing what it entails.
This was stated by US President Biden after meeting with Ukrainian leader Zelensky in Japan.
According to information on the Pentagon website, the package will include:
- Ammunition for HIMARS;
- Artillery shells;
- TOW anti-tank guided missiles;
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems;
- Bridging systems;
- Armoured medical vehicles;
- Trucks and trailers for transporting heavy equipment;
- Thermal imaging systems;
- Spare parts and other field equipment.
"The United States will continue to work with its Allies and partners to provide Ukraine with capabilities to meet its immediate battlefield needs and longer-term security assistance requirements," the statement noted.
Background. The US has stated that they are willing to transfer F-16s to Ukraine, "only if they will not be used to attack russian territory".
US President Joe Biden has long hesitated to transfer American fighter jets to Ukraine. Moreover, due to Washington's stance, European countries couldn't even train Ukrainian pilots on F-16s.
At the same time, The Washington Post pointed out that the timelines for delivering combat aircraft might not be as swift as Ukraine anticipates.
Northern European countries which possess F-16s and are willing to provide them to Ukraine – Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Poland – require time to inspect their arsenals and also resources to conduct pilot training.
It was reported earlier that Ukraine needed about 180 modern fighter jets to gain superiority in the air over russia.
