Mars chocolate bars will soon replace the usual environmentally polluting plastic wrapper with recyclable paper.

This is one of the first stages of a pilot project to introduce more environmentally friendly packaging for Mars Food products. The newly packaged chocolates have been available in 500 Tesco supermarkets in the UK since May 29.

Mars noted that it was not easy to find a suitable paper packaging solution with "sufficient level of required chocolate protection characteristics".

Mars Incorporated said that thanks to the new packaging, "200 million bars a year will become carbon neutral in the UK, Ireland and Canada."

Mars's current plastic packaging is not recyclable, like many other types of packaging, including crisp bags and many wrappers for other chocolate bars and candies. Masses of these materials end up in landfills and pollute soil and water.

According to the UK's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the problem with single-use plastic waste is that it does not biodegrade, but only breaks down into smaller pieces. This heavily pollutes the environment and wildlife for years to come.

In January, the British government announced its intention to ban the use of single-use plastics such as plastic cutlery, plates and trays made of polystyrene.

The date when the ban will take effect has not yet been set. Plastic straws were banned in the UK in 2020.

Background. As a reminder, the EU is preparing to abandon plastic and paper cards and move to a digital wallet.
