NYT: US satellites detect explosion at Kakhovka dam before it collapses

American reconnaissance satellites detected an explosion at the dam in Nova Kakhovka just before it was destroyed.

Source. This was reported on Friday by the New York Times, citing a senior Biden administration official.

The newspaper writes that although Washington suspects russia of organizing the explosion, there is no conclusive evidence yet.

A US official told the New York Times that the explosion was detected by satellites equipped with infrared sensors that recorded a temperature trail indicating an explosion.

"US analysts still don't know who caused the dam's destruction or how it happened," the newspaper writes.

The source added that russia is the main suspect, although there is no "hard" evidence of this yet.

The quoted official did not rule out that high water levels in the Kakhovka reservoir and previous damage to the dam could have contributed to its collapse, but the likely direct cause was an explosion, either intentional or accidental.

According to engineering experts quoted by the New York Times, an explosion from within the structure is the most likely cause of the dam's collapse.

Background. Meanwhile, it has become known that Norwegian seismologists have recorded that the Kakhovka HPP was destroyed by an explosion. Thus, the version that the dam collapsed on its own after the previous shelling is no longer credible.
