The European Parliament urges NATO to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance

The European Parliament has called on NATO allies to invite Ukraine to join the Alliance, and the "accession process will commence after the end of the war and be completed as soon as possible".

The corresponding resolution was voted on Thursday in Strasbourg during the plenary session of the European Parliament, 425 votes in favour, 38 against, 42 abstentions.

"The EP calls on NATO allies to fulfil their obligations regarding Ukraine's NATO membership and expects that future high-level meetings in Vilnius and Washington will pave the way for extending an invitation to Ukraine to join NATO and that the accession process will begin after the war and will be finalised as soon as possible," the resolution states.

Furthermore, the EP has called on EU Member States, NATO allies, and like-minded partners to closely cooperate with Ukraine to develop "timelines for security guarantees that need to be implemented immediately after the war, until full NATO membership is achieved".

The EP is also convinced that the destruction of the Kakhovka dam constitutes a war crime.

"All those guilty of war crimes, including the destruction of the dam, will be held accountable under international law," the resolution states.

The EP also expressed hope that negotiations with Ukraine regarding EU membership can begin this year.
