Ukrainian MPs propose punishment for infecting with particularly dangerous infection – imprisonment from 5 to 8 years
Parliamentarians may equate this to intentional grievous bodily harm and provide a corresponding provision in the Criminal Code

MPs are proposing to equate the act of infecting someone with a particularly dangerous infectious disease or infecting them with the agent of such a disease, to intentional grievous bodily harm, with punishments for such acts ranging from 5 to 8 years.
The relevant draft law was registered on the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) website on 19 June.
The MPs also propose to establish these sanctions for medical, pharmaceutical or other workers for improper performance of their professional duties that led to a person being infected with the human immunodeficiency virus:
- For improper execution that resulted in infecting one person, they suggest punishment of imprisonment up to 3 years or restriction of freedom for the same term, along with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for a term of up to 3 years.
- If improper execution led to the infection of two or more individuals or a minor, they suggest punishment of imprisonment from 3 to 8 years, along with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for a term of up to 3 years.
The draft law also proposes to punish the illegal disclosure of confidential medical information about infection with the human immunodeficiency virus or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, committed by medical workers, with fines from 2,000 to 5,000 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens, or community service for up to 240 hours, or restriction of freedom for up to 3 years, with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for a term of up to 3 years.
In addition, the MPs propose to provide punishment for intentionally infecting another person with a venereal disease, if this led to long-term health disorder, with corrective works for up to 2 years, arrest for up to 6 months, restriction of freedom for up to 2 years, or imprisonment for the same term.
