Norway – one of the few NATO countries that share a land border with russia – will begin replacing parts of the 70-year-old reindeer fence that runs along the far northern border, according to HT Gjerde Finnmark, the company that is installing the new fence, updating the old fence.
The company, on behalf of the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture, announced that it will begin replacing sections of the 196-kilometer border fence in mid-July.
The project will be "extremely demanding" given "the current geopolitical situation," said HT Gjerde Finnmark's chairman of the board, Kjell Magne Grønnli, adding that "it is very important that we do not cross the border with russia at any time during our work."
Grønnli added that while "the fence will still not have a border function," it will prevent "reindeer herds from entering russia, which we know can cause problems for reindeer owners."
Background. As a reminder, Norway is investing $18 billion in oil and gas production amid the cessation of supplies from russia.
