International Center for the Investigation of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine has started its work in The Hague

The International Center for the Investigation of the Crime of Russia's Military Invasion of Ukraine has begun its work in The Hague. The International Center for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression (ICPA) includes prosecutors from Kyiv, the EU, the US and the International Criminal Court.

"Thanks to the ICPA, independent prosecutors from different countries will be able to work together in one place on a daily basis, share evidence quickly and efficiently, and agree on a common investigation and prosecution strategy," reads the press release announcing the center's establishment.

Thus, the work of the Center is the first step towards the creation of a special tribunal that could bring Russian officials to justice for waging war against Ukraine.

At the same time, the founders of the Center note that Russia's war against Ukraine is the most documented in history. For the first time, an active investigation of the crime of aggression is being conducted during the war, not after it is over.

"At the same time, we are dealing with an international crime that has rarely been prosecuted and for which there is no standard practice," they write.

Until now, the only charges brought by an international organization against the Russian authorities in the context of the war in Ukraine were the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for dictator Putin and Children's Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova. The charges against them relate to the deportation of Ukrainian children.

Background. As a reminder, the UN has confirmed that Russia has killed at least 136 children in Ukraine and injured 518.
