UNESCO mission to arrive in Odesa to assess the scale of destruction of historic buildings by Russians

A UNESCO mission will arrive in Odesa after a large-scale Russian shelling of the city's historic center.

The mission will conduct a preliminary assessment of the damage to cultural heritage.
The day before, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine announced its intention to appeal to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and the Committee of the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention in connection with the Russian shelling of Odesa.
As it is known, on January 25, 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee included the historic center of Odesa in the list of World Heritage in Danger. According to the Ukrainian authorities, the process of including the historic center of the city in the UNESCO World Heritage List lasted about 10 years.
Currently, the UNESCO World Heritage List includes streets, buildings, and other historical sites in Odesa. In particular, the ensemble of Primorsky Boulevard, Deribasovskaya Street, Teatralnaya Square, Gogol Street, and the seaport are included.
As a result of Russian shelling on Sunday night, the Transfiguration Cathedral in the center of Odesa, historic buildings in the city center – the House of Scientists, residential buildings, the building of the Odesa State Music Lyceum named after Professor P. Stolyarsky, as well as port infrastructure facilities were damaged.
Background. As a reminder, during the invasion, the Russians damaged or destroyed more than 550 monuments of Ukraine's cultural heritage.
