In Transcarpathia, in the village of Goronda of the Mukachevo community, a multimodal logistics centre will be built with the support of the Italian Ministry of Economy, aimed at increasing grain exports to Italy.

This was reported by Business.Region.

According to the report, the Italian Minister of Economy, Adolfo Urso, has rallied Italian business circles around this project, involving both the railway sector and owners of Italian ports in Venice, Verona, and Trieste. The Minister invited them to join and become one of the founders of this terminal.

The enterprise will be built based on European standard narrow-gauge railways. The dry port, connected by rail, will link Ukraine with Italian cities, from where domestic products will then be distributed to other countries globally.

"We were looking for a logistics platform with a geographically convenient location, ensuring both broad and narrow gauge availability. In Transcarpathia, we have narrow gauges in Chop, Mukachevo, Batiovo, and Strabichevo stations. Everywhere, except for Strabichevo, private business was already operating. Hence, we decided to restore our narrow-gauge. We are talking about overgrown, unused land," said Ivan Turianytsia, head of the Gorondi community.

For the construction of the dry port, the community will allocate over 40 hectares of land.

The project aims to be a regional hub providing intermodal logistics and the possibility of storing grain, vegetable oil, and containers.

The terminal will focus on container logistics for maximum integration into Europe's logistics culture, significantly reducing logistics costs.

The terminal has access to three narrow-gauge railways – Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. This enables it to diversify its logistic routes, leading to Italy, 930 km from the city of Trieste.

With transshipment capabilities from broad gauge (1520 mm) to narrow (1435 mm), as well as storage facilities and container solutions, the project will enhance the flow of Ukrainian grain and sunflower oil to the European Union.

The Italian side is interested in such cooperation as they purchase a lot of wheat from Ukraine, particularly hard varieties, maize, and rapeseed. By investing in similar projects, the Italians can find beneficial positions for themselves.

Additionally, during the dry port's Goronda Platform presentation in Rome, the Italians also announced other joint projects. These include supplying Italian equipment for renewable energy, demining agricultural lands using agricultural machinery, allowing Ukraine access to Italian innovations in pharmaceuticals, modernising healthcare and rehabilitation facilities, aerospace industry programmes, restoring schools and hospitals in Kyiv, Odessa, and Sumy, and protecting cultural heritage.
