The UK Ministry of Defence signs three contracts to supply Ukraine with anti-drone equipment
The contract value exceeds $114 million
The UK Ministry of Defence has signed three deals, set to provide Ukraine with air defence equipment, amounting to over £90 million (more than $114 million).
This was stated in the British department's press release.
"These include a £56 million counter-uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) contract with Norwegian defence company Kongsberg and two further contracts to provide further air defence capabilities," the press release detailed.
The equipment in question includes the CORTEX Typhon systems, which can be mounted on vehicles. They will be able to detect drones, track their flight, interfere with their operation, and neutralise them. These systems can operate both autonomously and within a network, comprising sensors, cameras, radars, and electronic reconnaissance equipment.
"These air defence systems have the capability and flexibility to be rapidly deployed to either protect Ukraine’s civilian population and infrastructure, or be put to use on the frontline. The International Fund for Ukraine highlights the unity and resolve of our Allies to work together to provide Ukraine with cutting-edge equipment to meet its capability requirements," UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace noted.
The contracts were signed in light of Ukraine's acquisition of a new batch of over 100 drones for aerial reconnaissance, designed for both land and naval base operations. Ukrainian troops have already begun training on them.
Background. Norway will supply Ukraine with several C-UAS air defence systems to counter drones. Additionally, the Norwegian government has donated Dingo 2 vehicles, KONGSBERG RWS, and weaponry.
