The amount of environmental damage caused by the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine has reached UAH 2 trillion - Strelets

Ukraine's environmental losses from the full-scale Russian invasion amount to almost UAH 2 trillion, and some natural resources have been lost forever, said Ruslan Strelets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

Source. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

"Russians, like barbarians, destroy everything, not even realizing that the environment does not recognize borders... We have already calculated the losses: almost 2 trillion hryvnias of environmental damage – land and air pollution, burned forests, destroyed natural resources," the minister said on Sunday at the United for Justice international conference in Lviv.

He emphasized: "There are natural resources of Ukraine that are lost forever."

According to the minister, forest plantations suffer the most.

"Almost 3 million hectares of forest have been damaged, which is almost a third of Ukraine's forested areas, and 500,000 hectares are currently under occupation or in the war zone," he said.

As a result of Russia's actions, 600 species of fauna and 750 species of flora have been damaged, he added.

Background. In June, Greta Thunberg came to Kyiv and met with President Zelensky. As part of the International Working Group, they reviewed the severe consequences of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant explosion and other environmental crimes committed by Russians.
