Russia was not accepted back to the UN Human Rights Council
It received the fewest votes among the three applicant countries

Russia has failed to return to the UN Human Rights Council, having received the fewest votes among the three European applicant countries.
According to world agencies, during a secret ballot at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Russia received 83 votes. Its rivals, Bulgaria and Albania, received 160 and 123 votes, respectively.
In April 2022, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia was expelled from the Council, but now it has expressed its intention to return to the organization.
The UN Human Rights Council is composed of 47 countries. They represent different regions of the world, each of which has a certain quota.
This year, there were more candidates in two regional groups than there are available seats on the Council: Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Peru ran for Latin America (with three available seats), and Albania, Bulgaria and Russia ran for Eastern Europe (the region is supposed to be represented by only two states). Accordingly, Albania and Bulgaria will represent Eastern Europe.
